Two Natures of the Church

The Church of Christ has two Natures; the mystical and the physical. In the physical, we see the human, psychological, material, social, etc aspects of her.

However, these aspects are trying to overwhelm the church nowadays, making the mystical or spiritual aspect blurred.

Yes, blurred because of many reasons both from the side of her ministers and the lay faithful.

Buy, what makes the Church is in essence divine and spiritual; the Eucharist.

This is actually what the reading of today tries to emphasize, that the Church cannot do without the divine nature; the Holy spirit.

In the first reading Acts 9:31-42, we are presented with a model of the true Church, that lives in the fear of the Lord, and filled with the consolation of the Holy Spirit.

In the Gospel John 6:60-69, Jesus remained adamant even amidst unbelief because of his declaration that seems bizarre to the materialistic mind.

In fact, Jesus emphasized that spiritual aspect, such that when the Jews refused to accept Jesus’ teaching on the Eucharist, Jesus appeals to another spiritual phenomenon, his resurrection. He adds: “It is the Spirit that gives life; the flesh (the materialistic) cannot help.”

By this, the Lord wants us to understand that we should not have a purely materialistic way of approaching the Eucharist. The Eucharistic transformation is the work of the Holy Spirit. This is her point of unity and strength.

Let’s us remember then that for the Church of Christ to be very effective on earth, she should not only be socially alert but spiritual very alert. In the spirit lies the true strength of the Church.

The Church of Christ is bigger than the material, for Christ who founded her is not only man but also God. And as God is deeply spiritual, the Church is deeply spiritual.

The survival of the Church so far isn’t dependent on social security but on her spiritual security; the Eucharist, Christ Himself.
